Review Flip a Coin Movie

Two lives. Parallel sports. Different paths. Destiny or choice? Would you dare let a coin decide your fate? At last - a fictional windsurfing movie.

In March's issue we unveiled the producers and making-of feature from exciting new film project Flip a Coin Movie. The movie's since officially Premiered and become available for purchase on DVD and BluRay, so of course we felt it deserved a review.

Starring Starboard R&D Team rider and former Pro Kid Sven Akerboom, and Ski Cross Racer Thomas Borge Lie, the flick takes in a stack of mountain and beach locations including Italy, Holland, Western Australia, Thailand, Vietnam and Norway. There's also cameo appearances from Windsurfing stars such as Jaeger Stone and Scotty McKercher.

Based on a true story, Flip a Coin follows two childhood friends from the beach that remain close and in contact, despite their lives taking opposite, yet ironically similar routes.
Thumbed Productions windsurfing-mad Henk Van Doel was right in saying people would find it hard to put it in a category. It's got comedy, drama, emotion and wavesailing blended into a tale that's told in a traditionally cinematic style.

Although the movie's scripted, there's no dialogue scenes outside of the action segments, as John (Akerboom) and Jake's (Borge Lie) 'real life', silent reactions as they read and write each other letters, and the timely use of a narrator spin the yarn and let the plot unfold. OK, none of the cast will win any Oscars, but the realistic feel and gripping narrative's enough to overcome the lack of Hollywood talent - plus you won't see anyone from Beverly Hills carve a nice cuttie either.

Cinematically it's fantastic, with first-class HD quality, watershots, helicopter angles and the stamp of these mainstream, professional filmmakers' skills in creating geniune atmosphere and mood in critical up-close-and-personal scenes.

Full of funny one-liners mixed with thought provoking issues, Thumbed have created a truly original piece of work that'll appeal to people both inside and outside the sport.

One day maybe Henk and Maarten, The Windsurfing Movie crew and Quentin Tarantino will all sit in the same room together to create a masterpiece to save our sport, but, until then, if you've longed for windsurfing action and drama in a Big Screen style, then this is a must-view movie. BM

Flip a Coin comes with a Hardback Photo book and in DVD or BluRay format.
