POINT-7 ΩMEGA BOOM

We previewed the shock-absorbing Omega ‘Headless’ Boom from Point-7, developed in conjunction with Tecno Limits, who market the same product under the Cont@ct name in our March 2011 Issue.  With cited benefits for control in rough water, smooth landings, and a more compact feel from the shorter overall length we felt the concept deserved a test-drive…

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Out of the packaging this looks like a super quality monocoque construction carbon boom. Supplied with a shim for skinny masts, the clamp also fits SDM spars. We had one back end with drilled holes for back adjustment and another that looked like moulded holes from the tecno Limits version. Point 7 also offer an Ergal (high strength-to-weight ratio Aluminium) version at a lower price point.

All the inhaul and outhaul rope is nice stiff high quality line. It was a relief to see that, what appeared in initial pictures to be ‘cheap’ rivets on the clamp-to-arm attachment are actually solid stainless fixings in-the-flesh.

All plastic parts look like tough nylon with no brittle looking attachments or obvious weak spots. The grip is quite thin high density and the tube width is standard ‘thick’ tuning without any tapering.
