Second Life Movie Interviews

Wednesday 10th November, 2010 - 11:53am

The 'Second Life' movie project crew have 4 of the 6 top PWA riders still left with a chance of the Wave Title before the 2010 PWA Cabo Verde World Cup season finale. (Victor Fernandez, Kauli Seadi, Ricardo Campello and Philip Koester).

Here's the crew's reactions to some questions before the event. You can follow the project's progress via their Facebook Page.

Ricardo Campello

1: If you look at your actual current World Ranking, could you have imagined that you would be in this position before the year started?

Well my goal this year was to be in the top 3 in the wave ranking and I knew it was going to be super hard.  So far though I have been consistent and managed to get in the top 2! We are all now close and fighting for the title! I think all of us will do our best to get it!

2: It is 1 more week to go till the Event starts. Tell me how you're feeling inside?

Well I just came back from Maui where I have been training and getting some new boards made. I want to be super prepared this year and actually I'm doing ok so far.  Some times though the nerves get to you when you are at the event.

3: What does the Wave World Title mean to you?

It has always been my dream to be World Champion in Windsurfing. I have won 3 freestyle world titles but the discipline that I always wanted to do well in is the waves so for me it is a dream and I hope I can make it come true, but it will be tough.

4: Who will be the main contenders in the running?

Everyone will be my main contender because to advance through the heats to get your good results will be hard.  The level is super high now and everyone is super motivated but for sure Victor, Kauli and Brawnzinho will be hard to beat over there!

5: What conditions are you hoping for?

Big Waves and some wind. I would like to use my 5.0

6: How did you prepare yourself for this special type of event?

Like I said previously I have just spent 3 weeks in Maui sailing pretty much everyday and testing some boards so I could get used to mine, which are working pretty nicely. I just tried to sail as much as I could and now in 2 days I'm going to Cape Verde to train and film for "Second Life" our new movie.

7: How much gear you will bring?

I will bring 6 wave boards, haha that's my record on wave boards!  I ordered 4 new boards that I didn't have time to test because they weren't ready in time for me to try in Maui.  In Cape Verde we end up on the rocks a lot and normally the boards get trashed easily so you better be ready!

8: Why is Cape Verde considered to be one of the best wave sailing spots?

The perfection of the waves is amazing!

9: What's the first thing you would do after you won the title?

Celebrate a lot haha!

10: Its kind of strange to have the Top 4 in the world ranking working  together on the same project. How are your relationships on and off the water?

Well its always good, we don't have any rivalry, we are all super good friends and its great to be involved in the same project especially now we will spend  a lot of time together !

KAULI

1: If you look at your actual current World Ranking, could you have imagined that you would be in this position before the year started?

I WAS QUITE DISAPPOINTED WITH MY PERFORMANCE IN THE SINGLE ELIMINATION IN POZO, SO IN THE DOUBLE ELIMINATION I FOUGHT BACK AND IN DENMARK I FINALLY RETURNED TO THE PODIUM.  SO THIS HAS GIVEN ME HOPE TO DO WELL IN CAPE VERDE, WHICH IS MY FAVOURITE EVENT.

2: It is 1 more week to go till the Event starts. Tell me how you're feeling inside?

I FEEL THAT FINALLY I WILL GET THE CHANCE TO RIDE IN THE CONTEST
CONDITIONS I LIKE TO RIDE IN, JUST LIKE REGULAR FUN DAYS AT HOME.

3: What does the Wave World Title mean to you?

IT MEANS I HAVE ACHIEVED MY GOAL IN WHAT I LOVE TO DO!  I WISH MORE AND MORE I COULD BE ABLE TO RIDE IN PLACES THAT HAVE REALLY GOOD WAVES TO MAKE THIS TITLE REALLY WORTHWHILE.

4: Who will be the main contenders in the running?

FOR SURE MY FRIEND RICARDO CAMPELLO AND VICTOR FERNANDEZ WILL BE THE GUYS TO BEAT.  BUT ALSO MANY OTHER GUYS LIKE JOSH ANGULO WHO IS A LOCAL SAILOR, ALEX MUSSOLINI, DANNY BRUCH AND BRAWZHINIO CAN DO REALLY WELL HERE.

5: What conditions are you hoping for?

LOGO HIGH WAVES AND WIND FOR MY 4.8 FLY AND MY 57 CM WIDE JP BOARD, OR 4.5 WITH MY QUAD 55 CM WIDE BOARD.

6: How did you prepare yourself for this special type of event?

WINDSURFING IS A SPORT WHERE BEING ON THE WATER MATTERS A LOT.  I HAVE BEEN IN THE NORTH OF BRAZIL WHERE I JUST OPENED MY NEW CENTRE. THERE THE WIND IS FROM THE RIGHT SIDE FOR WAVE RIDING LIKE IN CAPE VERDE AND ALSO THERE IS WIND EVERYDAY, SO I KEPT IN GOOD RHYTHM.  OFF THE WATER I ALSO DO PILATES TO KEEP MY BODY FIT AND STRAIGHT.

7: How much gear you will bring?

1 SUP , 1 SURF BOARD , 4 WINDSURF BOARDS  ALL QUADS , SAILS FROM 4.2  TO 5.4 FLY FROM NEILPRYDE, AND A FEW SPARE MASTS!

8: Why is Cape Verde considered to be one of the best wave sailing spots?

BECAUSE  THE WAVES ARE SO CLEAN AND WITH PERFECT LINE UPS. THE  WIND IS THE PERFECT SIDE OFF  SHORE  DIRECTION.

9: What's the first thing you would do after you won the title?

CELEBRATE.....CALL FAMILY AND FRIENDS!!

10:  Its kind of strange to have the Top 4 in the world ranking working  together on the same project. How are your relationships on and off the water?

WE ARE ALL FRIENDS THAT IS THE GOOD THING ABOUT THE WINDSURFING WORLD, WE ARE ALL LIKE FAMILY!!

VICTOR FERNANDEZ

1: If you look at your actual current World Ranking, could you have imagined that you would be in this position before the year started?

For me I've always wanted to be in the position I'm in right now. I've never been leading the tour and now I have a great opportunity in the last contest to win my first title, and this is the best I could do so I'm very motivated for Cape Verde.

2: It is 1 more week to go till the Event starts. Tell me how you're feeling inside?

I feel good. I think it was a good decision to come to Cape Verde early and be one of the first guys to adapt myself to the conditions, climate and test the equipment I'm going to use in the contest. These things all together make me feel more confident inside.

3: What does the Wave World Title mean to you?

Wining a Wave World Title has always been a dream for me, it means a lot of work for many years, training, travelling and experience in windsurfing.

4: Who will be the main contenders in the running?

Each of the 32 riders here are very good sailors and all of them are contenders.  For me every heat has the same value and they are all important to get to the finals.

5: What conditions are you hoping for?

I hope for Punta Preta or little Hookipa, light side to side-offshore winds and small to big waves.

6: How did you prepare yourself for this special type of event?

I prepared myself physically with the help of 2 friends in Almería during the last whole year.  They have coached me in the gym, pool, cycling and running.  Apart from that I trained a lot in wave riding during the last 2 years travelling to Maui, Chile or Cape Verde.  Also with Fanatic we have improved our boards a lot for down the line conditions.

7: How much gear you will bring?

I will bring 3 boards, 9 sails, 15 masts, 4 booms and 7 extensions...

8: Why is Cape Verde considered to be one of the best wave sailing spots?

The quality of waves is incredible, perfect wind direction, warm weather and not crowded.

9: What's the first thing you would do after you won the title?

If I won the title I would celebrate it with all my friends in Cape Verde and back home with my family and friends.

10: Its kind of strange to have the Top 4 in the world ranking working  together on the same project. How are your relationships on and off the water?

My relationship with all the riders is very good.  On the water we push each other a lot as in any other sport.  Off the water we are friends, we've travelled together for many years and that's why we are a big group of friends making a nice living.

PHILIP KÖSTER

1: If you look at your actual current World Ranking, could you have imagined that you would be in this position before the year started?

I never expected to be in 3rd place at this time of the year. It was great for me that the tour started in Pozo where I finished 2nd. Now I'm going for more!

2: It is 1 more week to go till the Event starts. Tell me how you're feeling inside?

I feel still pretty normal and not under too much pressure. I am training every day and have been spending time with the crew and my Dad.

3: What does the Wave World Title mean to you?

The World Title in waves is the biggest achievement the sport offers. It means everything to me and is the reason why I compete.

4: Who will be the main contenders in the running?

All the guys here are really strong. There are no easy heats in Cape Verde.

5: What conditions are you hoping for?

I hope for big waves but also some wind. I would like to use my 4.8 or 5.0.

6: How did you prepare yourself for this special type of event?

I came to Cape Verde 10 days before the contest to train and film for our new movie "Second Life". Spending time here helps to adjust to these kind of conditions.

7: How much gear you will bring?

I will bring 3 Boards, 10 Masts and my main used sail sizes but with 2-3 spares of each.  You can destroy lots of gear here!

8: Why is Cape Verde considered to be one of the best wave sailing spots?

Cape Verde has the dream conditions for all of us. Big, clean waves and side offshore winds. It can't get better than that!

9: What's the first thing you would do after you won the title?

I would be sooo happy!

10: Its kind of strange to have the Top 4 in the world ranking working  together on the same project. How are your relationships on and off the water?

On the water we fight for the title but on land we are a cool group together. I think it is great that even sailors who are fighting for a world title can work on projects like Second Life together.
