From your Normal sailing position, pick a spot with some flat water and start to head upwind.
1. Unhook and take the back foot out of the strap. Put pressure on the windward rail. Lean the rig back and your body forward. Drop your hips and maintain a high mast foot pressure by hanging off the boom. Look around into the turn.
2. Keep the rig back and hips forward,
Look forward and carve smoothly.
3. Step out of the front strap and place it just in front of the mast foot.
Keep the rig away on an extended front arm. Keep low and look forward.
4. You are now sailing almost dead upwind. Your front foot is placed just in front of the mast foot getting ready for the foot transition.
5. You are now aiming dead upwind. Your hips swing forward and the rig is over the tail of the board.
6.Release the backhand, and reach for the new side of the boom. The hips are forward. And you begin to shift the weight on to the front foot.
7. The critical part of the tack is the foot transition. Make a quick pivot around the mast foot. And at the same time release the front hand.
The old back foot becomes the new front foot just in front of the mast.
8. Turn your head and look forward, this is very important, and will help you bringing the board downwind on the new tack. Grap the boom well down with the backhand. Get the back foot well down the board.
9. Draw the rig forward and the body back. Sheet in and push with the front foot and pull in with the back foot, to drive the board off the wind. Remember to keep the rig away from your body.
10. Really drop your hips to drive the board off the wind. Keep the hands well apart look forward. Extend your legs, hook in and it's in the bag.
TIP: A PLANING BOARD IS A STABLE BOARD - ENTER THE TACK WITH SPEED AND YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO SUCCEED. PRACTICE ON BOTH TACKS!
