Peter had some vital help from The University of Cape Town Yacht Club and Steven Rhodes - who's even helped secure some lottery funding.

Steven: I'm a student at the University of Cape Town (UCT) finishing off my doctorate in engineering now. When Janet Lightbody (Gust Magazine) first approached me to help out after Peter started the idea, I was commodore of the yacht club. My involvement with the UCT Yacht Club has meant we have always had their boards available to us.

Paul Wagstaff (from BaySports) has lent us boards and sails on many occasions. He’s not available every time, but most times we have been to Milnerton Aquatic Club for coaching he has helped us out. He brought a lot of equipment, SUP’s and his son Mitch to help at the last session at UCT Yacht Club at Zeekoevlei. Antony Teale (Cape Sports Center) also lent us boards to use at Shark Bay.

However, my time at UCT is running out and I wanted to see the idea grow into a development project, and then hopefully into a self-sustaining/self-supported school. I applied to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NDLT) through UCT with a motivation letter, plan and budget. They gave us R127,000 (approx Euro 13,000 / USD 20,000 / GBP 11,500) to kick off the project. The plan now is to transfer the day-to-day running of the project fully into the hands of the new UCT Yacht Club committee members. READ MORE
We are aiming to start the school with all the new equipment in October. In the mean time we are just focusing on introducing the kids to the “new coaches” and using what equipment is available to us. We still need to train the yacht club students up to a level where they can take over the coaching completely, so we are hiring outside help or asking “pro” windsurfers to volunteer their services.

The school equipment is being built into a trailer to keep it mobile. In the beginning we will be teaching in Cape Town and Langebaan, but if the project is a success there may be an opportunity to build several trailer-based schools which we will take elsewhere around the country.Close Story
