2012 Volvo Surf Cup Westerland

Tuesday 6th March, 2012 - 4:33pm

PRESS RELEASE

Volvo Surf Cup presented by Flens selected for the FW European Cup

Every year in the last full week of July the finals of the German Windsurfing Championships take place in Westerland on the beautiful island of Sylt. The event is by far the biggest national windsurfing event in Germany and probably one of the biggest windsurfing events worldwide.

In 2011 not less then 120.000 spectators came to see Germanys windsurfing elite fighting it out for the national titles on the rough North Sea waters. The size of the event matches the PWA Worldcup which takes place at the same venue in September every year.

With Volvo cars, the Flensburger brewery, Chiemsee fashion and numerous other sponsors the event leaves a great impression at visitors and participants. It is absolute peak season and Sylt is crowded with ten thousands of tourists. The event, the regatta and the parties will make the Volvo Surf Cup presented by Flens a memorable experience.

To give you an impression of what you can expect we present you the movie of last years event here:

This year the event will get another boost. The Volvo Surf Cup presented by Flens has been selected for the new Formula Windsurfing European Cup. This series combines some of the most prestigious events of the continent which feature the discipline Formula Windsurfing. So this year numerous international racers will challenge Germanys local heroes it their home waters. Besides the International Championships this should be one of the most spectacular FW events of the season.

The event is organized by Choppy Water who have a long lasting experience in organizing national and international events and championships. The Volvo Surf Cup presented by Flens takes place from Wednesday, July 25th until Sunday, July 29th (competition days). Tuesday, July 24th is the inscription day. Registration is possible from now on through the official website of the national series German Windsurf Cup (The website is in German language but the registration is self explaining):

The entry fee is only EUR 60,- no matter if you participate only in Racing/Formula Windsurfing or also in one or more of the other disciplines. The Volvo Surf Cup presented by Flens is a multi discipline event, featuring not only Formula Windsurfing but also Slalom, Waveriding and Freestyle.

Competitors from foreign countries don't need to pay the entry fee in advance. They can pay directly in cash at the inscription in order to avoid expensive bank transfer costs. None the less it is strongly advised to register as soon as possible as the number of starting slots is limited.

A Notice of Race and a traveling and accommodation info will be published shortly. If you have any questions or need help or assistance, don't hesitate to contact the Choppy Water team directly:

Comment from Matthias Regber (CEO of Choppy Water): 'We are honored that our event has been selected for the new continental series. It has always been our goal to organize great events that combine high performance sport on the water with lifestyle, music and party. We have already achieved a strong success on the national base. But now we will get another international boost that should help to push the level even further. We will do our best to be good hosts for our international guests and will try to make the event a great experience for them!'
